Lol! I bet you're appalled by this strange behaviour.

Did another 34km bike ride this afternoon. Same speed as last time but felt like I was putting less effort in, which is good.

On Tuesday I did my usual 34 km route (but in reverse) - strange how different this feels.

Today, I did a new 70km ride. It took just under 3 hours which included 3 short stops to stretch and check my phone GPS. It took me through some lovely farming villages in Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire. Essentially, Oxford out to a little place called Ashendon then down to Long Crendon and back to Oxford. Annoyingly, it seems that my phone got knocked or something as Strava didn't record the route. I paid far more attention to nutrition during the ride today. To be fair, my rides prior to this one have all been too short for nutrition to make a difference to performance. This time round, I decided to eat something every 45minutes or so. I had a fig roll, followed by another one, followed by 2 energy gels (essentially maltodextrin). I also dissolved an electrolyte tab in my water bottle which i think made a difference. What I probably got wrong was total fluid intake, cause whilst I felt ok when i came off the bike, my wee was too dark. I think I consumed about a litre when it should've been 1.5 litres or more.

I'll definitely be doing this route again. 70km is about as far as I'd like to go for now.

34 km ride - out and back rather than a loop. Tailwind on way out and headwind back. Averaged just under 27km/h. Enjoyable.

I've discovered some fat boy climbing tips: basically avoid standing and stay seated for as long as possible. Sit back and use them powerful glutes that you've spent years developing with squats and deads and use them to your advantage. This is what the skinny boys don't have. Also, grab the hoods on their outside edges as this seems to open the chest out and allow better breathing. Another thing I'm finding useful is to actively think 'relax' especially in the upper body. I have more junk up there to carry in the form of pecs, traps and arm muscles and tensing them is a waste of energy. There's no doubt that being skinny is best for climbing but if you're a fat boy, there's no harm in trying to use some of your assets to your advantage.

Alright matey! Good to see you back posting here.

In strength circles I feel tiny but at 90kg I'm pretty beefy for a road cyclist. All the XL stuff in the cycling shop is skin tight on me!

62.5km bike ride. Awful weather conditions that properly caught me out. Rain, wind and hail stones at one point. I went out in summer kit without waterproofs. Got soaked. The Jaffa cakes en route were nice though.

This week I did a couple of 34km rides during the week and a 70km one today.

There's a little village called long crendon at the 45km point where I normally stop at the post office and buy some water. Today, I decided to stop for a little longer and have a double espresso at the cafe across the road. It made a massive difference to the remaining 25k. Today's ride was fuelled by a Mars bar.

Espresso and cycling are like red wine and cheese. Perfect.

Great to read about your rides mate and your 'fat boy' climbing advice is sound. Although you're not that heavy! I was 105kg when I started and I'm hovering around 85kg now. Although I'm 5kg over where I'd like to be. (And have been).

Nice one mate.

I'd like to slim down to 82kg or so and eventually combine the cycling with light high rep lifting.

For now I'm just trying to up the weekly mileage. Dont know whether this is the right thing to do, but I'm not too bothered about the quality of them miles. Just want to get more and more riding experience under my belt and get better at riding per se.

This morning it was too nice to stay in, so I did a 'fasted' 34km ride after necking an espresso. This kind of fasted exercise is apparently good for torching fat.

It is. It's also rrally good at getting your body used to burning fat as fuel, a big thing for an endurance athlete.

I think your approach is spot on. Just ride your bike and enjoy it.

I'm liking it so far. It's good exercise but what's really got me hooked is the sense of freedom it gives. Exploring new routes and that slight element of danger is pretty cool too.

Basically, it's my excuse to f**k off for a few hours and leave the chaos behind for a while.

I did 62km today in 2hr30mins. Longest distance to date without getting off the bike. Ate 2 bananas and some cake en route.
