Member 5141, 4199 posts SQ 300, BP 180, DL 350830.0 kgs @ 130kgs UnEq | Post Edited: 27.08.2017 @ 09:00 AM by KevC86 27/8 - Doncasters strongest man Threw myself in to this with only a few days notice, just as a chance to try out some of the events ive got at Elite Britains next month in a competitive setting. I knew id be below my best on a couple of events, but was counting on brute strength to see me through those ones. I was further hampered by taking ill on friday, so didnt manage to start feeding properly until about 6pm. Event 1 - max log Opening weight was only 100kg, which meant doing a lot of reps in fairly quick succession. 145 went up nice and easy, but just couldnt get my balance under 150 (pressing in the sunlight sucks). Joint 1st. Event 2 - 330 yoke x 20m Forced to do a very low pick up here as the spacings on the yoke werent great. Made for a very slow start, but id got in to my stride by about the 5m mark and covered the last 15 in good speed. 12s, 3rd place. Event 3 - 260 deadlift for reps. Very light deadlift event by my standards meant i was sure of good points. I was also up 2nd to last and knew the guy up after me had dropped big pts in the 1st 2 events so wouldnt be a threat overall. 6 reps was joint 1st when i went up, so i went out, pulled a wonderfully easy 7 reps, checked my count with the ref to make sure i was leading then called it. 2nd place. Event 4 - 202kg fingals finger This is the one i wanted to try, much longer and wider finger than ive been using in training had me a little nervous. A couple of the bigger guys had hit 3 reps, so i knew what i needed. Lower back cramped up as soon as i picked up the finger, and before id finished the 1st rep my shoulder was cramping as well. 2nd rep was an exercise is trying to ignore pain, and basically saw me bunny hop the thing over the tipping point. 3rd place. 5th event - stones Destroyed a pack of jaffas cakes and a pint of orange juice once the cramps had eased off and then started to tacky up. Had a 2pt lead heading in to this event, and was last up, so i knew all i needed was to complete the run, place top 3 and id take the win overall. First stone was to a very high platform which cost me a little time, but i flew through the next 3. Took a quick break to retacky, then loaded the final stone, no drama. 5 stones in 48s, 2nd place. Overall 1st place, 3 pts ahead of 2nd place. Fairly happy with how things played out, a little upset to miss the 150 log, but since ive not touched 1 in 4 months or so its not a big issue. Bit of a kick in the balls to lose the deadlift event knowing how easy it would've been to hit the 10 reps and win it, but saving energy after not being able to eat properly on friday was the bigger priority.

Took ill around 2am Wednesday morning, and was unable to eat until around lunch time yesterday. Didnt get a proper meal in from 9pm Tuesday until 8pm Thursday. Also had a lot of running around to do today, so the end result was just 1 single at 330, rather than the 3 id intended, and no accessory work at all. Still a little weak and drained, but over whatever bug it was that took me down, so energy levels should climb quickly enough.

Mikey was leading with what looked a very hard 13 reps. First 9 reps went easy, then things started getting hard. Had to take a quick breather at 12 reps, and got the ref to tell me when there were 15s left. Jumped back in and pulled another 2, had time enough for 1 more, but not sure it was there, and didnt think I'd need it, so called it. 14 reps, 1st place. Event 2 - Truck pull All the times were fairly close so just went out and did my best. 4th place. Event 3 - Viking press Again went out knowing what Mikey and JP had done, and that Hywel was leading with 13. First 10 went easy. Put it down for a breather and told the ref to tell me when i had 15s. Got back in and put up 3 fairly easy, had to fight for rep 14, but got it done. 14 reps, joint 1st i believe. Event 4 - 130kg farmers x 40m This was a last minute substitute for fingals. MC was talking about what a horrid set of farmers they were, and guys before me were moving slow, but id picked them up earlier in the day and knew i could move them. Half jogged, took my time to get grip set after turn and took off again. Knew i was quick. Turns out i was 12s quicker than anyone before me. 25s, 3rd place. Event 5 - Stones Mikey Lane was 1st up and only got 2 of the 5 stones, complaining they were covered in grass. I was 2nd up, struggled a bit with stones slipping, but loaded 4 with no real drama. Tacky was covered in crap by now though so just couldnt get to grip with 5th stone. Most of the other guys did 5 stones pretty easy since me and Mikey had cleaned them up. 7th place - this dropped me out of 1st for the first time all day and meant i was 3.5pts behind JP heading in to the final event. Event 6 - Back to back tug o war. Miraculously JP went out in the 1st match, so i knew i could get the overall, but id have to get 3rd to get pts required to overtake him. 1st round i was against the guy in 7th overall, he was also one of the few guys i outweighed. He dug in and put up a hell of a fight, even dragging me back to within a few inches of the line, but after seeing John lose and knowing i could win there was no chance i was giving up. I dug in and started to drive properly, once i started moving there was no way i was stopping. Took about 40s i believe, but i got the f**ker over that line, though i was breathing hard. 2nd round i drew the biggest guy in the field, and was giving up about 4st in bw. I dug in, but just couldnt hold him, i kept my feet locked, but i was getting pulled upright. It took him all of about 10s to drag me over the line. Joint 3rd, no 3rd place pull off. Overall 2nd, 0.5pts behind JP. Gutted.
