Monday, 30th July, start 16:00

Two weeks since the worst deadlifting session of the century so far and here we are again. Bim has told me to psyche myself up and I have pondered this during the day and I now realize I really don't know how to. An ex-army chap who was with us told me to "just destroy it" "Take the war to the bar" I'm not really sure what that means but I do get the gist of it and while I'm thinking about that I am not thinking about deadlifting and that sounds like a plan. I have the competition belt with me as well.

So here we jolly well go
60 x 5
60 x 3
60 x 3
60 x 3
60 x 3

belt on

100 x 2
140 x 1
160 x 1
180 x 1
200 x 1
210 x 1
220 x 1

So far so good, all smooth and sweet and I did rather make a bollox of my first 200 last time, the second was a peach so I have got as far as I did last week but without the minor mishap of the first 200. I did consider going 227.5 and then maybe 232.5 to avoid the dreaded 230 but that way lies madness and this is no time for dancing, this is the time for confrontation, take the war to the bar as some say

230 x 1

There was a moment of indecision as it passed the knees and it slowed more than was ideal, but it got a shift on after that and it was finished with aplomb. I held it for about fifteen seconds cos it felt good doing it and then it was lowered in the manner of the library

180 x 3

And that will do. The belt was on hole nine for deadlifts (hole ten for squats). It's a good belt for singles and a poor one for reps as my gut and the belt look seem to fall out for reps. But singles are fine. End there and away with a spring in my step and a smile on my face. How things can change in a fortnight, even my knees smiled tonight.

Excellent news Pete. For me the psych-up is anything that gets a bit of adrenaline flowing, which is be easier said than done sometimes.

Again, I would really struggle to do that. I never realized that until tonight. Emptying my head would work rather well, but that's not easy either. For example - if told to not think about polar bears - what are you then thinking of, but thinking of one thing while doing another seemed to work very nicely. I will have to remember that for the future

The thing is, Pete, you're normally only happy when you're complaining...

I also struggle with the usual "get angry" advice, probably due to my life-long journey with anger management. This is where I find closing my eyes and visualising the lift in as much detail as possible very useful.

Complaining is a life-long hobby and though I say so myself I am rather good at it, a good moan is very rewarding and mood-enhancing. It is not my life's only happiness bringer though

I find that helpful on the days and nights running up to it, this seals the image in the mind to return to when thinking of other things at the moment of lifting when I divert my conscious mind away and let my subconscious do its thing.

That sounds complicated but in fact it isn't. That's another advantage of it

It is hard to clear the mind of all thoughts when lifting but it was something that I did when lifting in comps. When I used to set up to the bar I would consciously think about the things I needed to do such as where to grip the bar and put my feet then I would listen for the commands, this gave the conscious brain something to do so it wouldn't interfere with the subconscious mind who I was trusting to do the lift. It was a lot of work to learn to keep the mind clear. It is extremely difficult to successfully lift if you are thinking about technique or the lift during it. When Al used to say let it flow this was what he was trying to get at.

I don't recall that phrase at all. He told me to "get fired up" I told him many times that I didn't know how to but it never stopped him telling me.

I remember watching Eddie Halstead walking onto the platform at Mytholmroyd and Alan saying that here was a man with "some fire in his belly" From the way he said it, it was obviously a huge compliment, and from the way Eddie approached everything I understood exactly what he meant. But I never had any fire in mine, and probably never will.

Still we are all different, what suits one doesn't suit another. I try to get onto the platform without anyone noticing, lift quietly and get off the same way. Only me and the refs should ever know.

Wednesday, 1st August, start 16:10

Bench, very raw
20 x 15
20 x 15
20 x 15
20 x 15
50 x 5
60 x 5
70 x 3
80 x 3
90 x 2
all paused now
100 x 1
110 x 1
115 x 1
120 x 1
125 x 1
125 x 1
125 x 1
touch and go now
115 x 2
110 x 2
110 x 2
paused again for the last one
110 x 2

Close grip
60 x 8
70 x 8
80 x 8
90 x 8

The first of the 125s was a difficult lift largely because it was lacking in leg drive, this was corrected on the second two and as a consequence of that they were much better reps. The four sets that followed were rather fun

Physio tonight.

It was almost certain the curls that caused the neck problem so he concentrated on that. Neck manipulation always terrifies me, but it works. Neck was manipulated and I was duly terrified, but I am terrified no more. All is well with the world once more.

He said it a fair bit, usually on squats when he could see somebody was overthinking it.

A farmer asked his sheep dog to go into a field and count the sheep, when the dog returned it told him forty.

"That's odd" said the farmer "I thought there was only thirty eight"

"I rounded them up" the dog replied
