On the way to the gym tonight I was strongly tempted to try a night of singles, but that would have been a very unwise thing to do (as mental preparation would have been zero) so I finally decided to do what I was always going to do - a triple at two forty. These were all pretty good, the second one being the best. I seem to be a touch slow off the floor and then once near the knees things accelerate considerably. When this reaches its natural conclusion a session or ten while stood on a board may be advisable.

Tbar shrug
60 x 10
70 x 10
80 x 10
80 x 10
Did these just for a change tonight

All in all a good night. Happy.

Nice one, Pete. I trust the shoulders were thrust back in no uncertain terms?

It was at the front of my mind, and they were as far back as they could be. I will however strive to get them further.

Like squat depth, I suspect that this will be something I will never be completely happy with - always wanting that little bit more

Wednesday, 9th August, start 16:15

Death by deadlift
60 x 21
Hard tonight. I can make it through to 14 with ease but after that things start to get difficult, sometimes quickly sometimes not so. Tonight it was quick, I could happily have called it a day at 20 but that was just too early to start waving the white flag. 21 was hard though, recovery was good though but Lord was I hot

Bench
20 x 15
20 x 15
60 x 5
70 x 5
80 x 5
90 x 5
100 x 5
110 x 5
115 x 4
100 x 5
I couldn't make the fifth rep at 115 which was a major surprise, as all that preceded it had been fairly brisk and quite easy, but the tank emptied real fast. I have said this before but I am going to have to sit down and write out a proper, cyclical programme for this lot.

Tricep pushdown
25 x 10
30 x 10
35 x 10
40 x 10
45 x 10
50 x 10
That'll do. The tank really is empty. I'm off but unlike Captain Laurence Titus Oates, I won't be gone for some time. Back Friday in fact

Last night was a sensation. I was going to record this last night but I was probably asleep before she had started her car. Zonked till bedtime, bed then re-zonked until the alarm rudely rousted me from a very happy place.

In the words of the song "oh what a night" He then goes on to mention the wrong month of a very wrong year. So I'll leave it there.

I was one and walking in the living room. You were Perhaps 7 playing whiffle ball with your mates?

These were rather variable tonight, the last set being the best. As the weight is light I have a tendency to take it rather for granted and don't give it the respect it deserves, consequently the depth suffers. But if I concentrate and pay attention, everything improves. Lesson learned.

Boots off, pumps on

Deadlift
60 x 5
100 x 3
140 x 3
170 x 3
170 x 3
170 x 3
170 x 3
170 x 3
All very pleasant, and shoulder thrust back with enthusiasm, the only negative with these was that when loading the very first weight I managed (and managed it with ease I may add) to catch my shin on the deadlift jack. This was made worse by the fact that I only have myself to blame. It hurt rather a lot initially and then backed off to a numbing ache. It still aches now. Plus a have a four inch scratch along my leg just below a couple of other previous deadlifting scars from a few years back. Hopefully this will heal and leave no trace, but I wouldn't risk money betting on that.

Nifty bit of maths there Billy. I have no memory of being seven. No doubt I was and it was probably fun. But I honestly don't remember

Adlington's British champion and three other ladies are lifting today at Mytholmroyd so the Mini will be Yorkshire bound for a jolly day out.

The one fly in the ointment - you guessed it - rising f**kin' bar. Ah well, a splendid breakfast and a chance to shout at people in a large hall is not to be sniffed at, plus I do regard it as very important that club members support the others.

What is the earliest memory. I remember crying my first day of kindergarten. Everything is blurry though. Some people made themselves believe that they remember events in life because they were told to them several times over from their elders, but in reality they are fooling themselves. It is cool when someone jogs your memory and the events slowly comes to surface.

I cried on the way to infant school too, that is probably my earliest memory. But the earliest one that I can specifically date is when I was ten years old, I watched England beat West Germany in the world cup final on a small , black and white TV.

The score was 4 - 2 but I cannot remember the first, second and third goals, but I can remember the fourth, fifth and sixth

It isn't, it really isn't. What those Johnny weightlifters get up to is no concern of mine but back in the bad old days when BWLA ran powerlifting they thought that rising bar was such a spiffing idea that PLers should use it too.

This meant that the real behemoths like Big Phil had to sit quietly while all their opponents took all their squats and then he would have to go out and squat 340, rest for three minutes, squat 360, rest another three minutes and then do 380, three lifts like that for a 28 stone man was almost life-threatening. But it had to be a good idea because weightlifters did it.

I will admit that if you have ten weightlifters who are all much of a muchness it does bring tactics into play and can add to the excitement, but if the lifters are of very different abilities then it leads to many, many, many minutes of f**k all happening while people follow themselves. It can add hours to a comp.

So on balance, it's s**t.
