Don't know if anyone here has trained at catts gym, orrell recently, but the forza bench there has clearly been re-upholstered by someone from CSL sofas - it's ridiculously plush and soft. Noticed how hard and 'off' everything over about 150kg felt benching on that tonight. Trying to work out if I've mysteriously lost about 15kg off my 1RM in a few days or if this softness could be so detrimental.

You probably aren't getting as tight and the lats aren't firing as hard. I have pressed off a soft bench before. I wasn't lifting heavy, but definitely didn't have the same explosion from the chest.

I would imagine something similar to deadlifting in a soft area. Obviously you wouldn't be able to push off your heels the same and create the required force necessary.

Wasn't sure if it was just my niggling shoulder I've got but it makes a lot of sense. I remember deadliftng on soft grass being a lot harder.

I think anything slightly different can throw you off. I benched for a while on a pretty soft bench, then switched to a hard one and was down about 10kg overnight. Back to normal in a couple of weeks.

Read the title and immediately thought: 'yeah. I have. At Catts gym'
Lol
That was about 6 years back.
No change then.

Newton's third law - for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. When you press, your energy is lost into the softer cushioning; when benching on a harder bench, the energy isn't lost pressing yourself downwards.

It's why cyclists have harder shoes to improve efficiency.

Yes I'm surprised how much it affects esp as weight gets heavy - id thought the extra compression of holding more weight would negate it somewhat

I was actually 10kg stronger on that bench at one point, could dig my shoulders in further

i'm going to use the other one near it next time - solid bench that has weird little rollers on the stands.
due to contracting client i'm with atm, can't get to ralls on monday for next 2 months, so it's catts or dave's gym northwich (a pretty decent place but has a habit of being rammed at 6-7pm) until then.

If you're near wigan, Strength and fitness lab in ince has some decent kit, £25 a month no contract (or £4 a sesh or £10 a week) might be worth a try, bog standard bench though.

I bench on a wooden bench. Anything else is just spongey. I only bench 122 as well. Must feel like proper s**t for you stronger lads.

I've used that bench a few years ago and thought it was soft then.
