if you have a 36" tv at home take that with you to the gym and you want the bar somewhere in the middle of the diagonal width .Easy as that, who wants to carry round a cumbersome tape measure anyway .

Ridiculous suggestion! Aren't most TV's either 32" OR 37". Who has a 36 these days. How about the easier way of taking a cucumber or 2 to the gym. Remember to measure them first though.

nex time you are getting your inside leg measured, get him to stop at 18", then put your finger on the mark, then keep the finger there until you next do 18" deadlifts, makung sure to set the bar up at that mark

alternatively you could go to the nearest tattoo parlour and get him to tattoo a line where your finger is after having it measured by your tailor

I always used the '3 barbell method'.

Simply balnce the bar to be lifted across 2 other barbells. 18"!

they have some in B&Q. Best bet is probably to take bar/plates/boxes etc to B&Q, set up in the aisle and measure with one of the tape measures. You can use those cheap dayglo ones, or a more expensive one if you want a rubber grip and a tape lock. Make sure you put it back where you got it from though.

Is Toms method going to have the centre of the bar at 18", or the bottom. Are bumper plates 17.5"? If so, great. Using 18" plates will put the bar centre at nearer 18 1/2", so you'd need to stand on a 1/2 inch board, which itself creates a problem...how would you measure it?

Well by my maths....

AT OSG, they're 17.5". DON'T ask me how I measured them, it's far too complicated.

Anyway, This would put the center of the lower tier bars 8.75" from the ground. Dividing by 2 is a method best left to be described by another thread though.

We now note that the diameter of the bar is 29mm. Some crafty decimal to imperial conversion reveals the bar to have a diameter of 1.14", meaning the top of the bar will be 8.75 + (1.14 / 2) inches from the ground. 9.32".

Now, to find the height of the center of the bar to be lifted, we must add on 8.75 to the height of the top of the lower tier bars.

This comes out to 18.07", making me a f**king lier and a cheat.

Standard plate height is 450mm which is 17.71 inches

The confusion never ends it would seem....
