I'm loving the casual setup for the clean. Does he do the same thing in competition?

Normally yes.

My only slight concern is whether he would fall foul of a strict interpretation of 'oscilation' - although I suspect any jury who overturned his lift would never leave the building alive. Happy

Watching his training as he has built up from his year off has been very interesting - seeing how rarely the top guys compete I think it has built up a lot of interest (same with Mendes etc).

Re: The 'oscilation' I have no idea how to interpret that rule but he hasn't had a single lift red-lighted so far for it in competition and he does the same thing every time.

Mendes training has been interesting but he can't even be talked about in the same thread as Illyin.

My understanding is that rule relates to 'deliberate' oscilation. He doesn't stand there getting the wings flapping, he just gets on with it between 'Clean' and 'Jerk'. It aint bad.

Oh, I quite agree - however I seem to recall 'hearing' the IWF were going to be stricter in future. Ilyin himself is noticeably motionless before commencing the jerk.

As for Mendes, I was referring to his frequent video updates creating interest in his training,

Interestingly the actual wording is fairly unclear, in that the first sentence does not always lead to the second. I can't post links from my phone but it's in the IWF Technical book.

I suspect this is , to paraphrase the old maxim: 'I can't define Obscenity but I know it when I see it'.

Cool. Quite the contrast with some other lifters who seem to sit there for ages, à la Klokov.

RE: Klokov, I guess he must have "inherited" his tendency to wait from his Father, as I recall he used to do it too, though not to the same extreme.

Can't remember if he's addressed this at some point, it's probably on an interview on ATG or somewhere.

Absolutely ignore what I said regarding the "oscilation" - as per a post on the Pendlay thread the new rulebook (which I thought I was looking at but was not) clearly states only the athlete must be motionless.

Thumbs up!
