Check out the vid of a University level Offensive Tackle squat 810lbs pretty easily! I know depth could be better, but it isn't a powerlifting squat, it's an athlete squatting a badass amount of weight.

If you scroll down there is a link to another vid of a high school football player (less than 18 years old) who is benching 515lbs for 3 reps!!!

Imagine what they could do in the strength biz if they didn't know they were going to make millions of dollars playing football!

interesting thread, prob yes and no?

How about this though, are model looks wasted on non porn stars???

ie just because you can dosent mean you should. Strength has other purpose as well as purpose within itself.

But funding and reward, theres the cake question.

Bench- man that spotter need a slap!

You could probably just as easily argue that strength sports are a waste of a good athlete seeing as society seems to prefer non strength sports and in quite a big way.

Indeed

Its not wasted, as he has a far greater chance of making a living out of virtually any other sports

This will probably be seen as sacrilege, but I saw Pudz win the ESM one time and he looked pretty damn awesome. One of the guys with me looked a bit puzzled and commented that "there must be something that someone so talented can do". Not everyone is into SM.

I'm lucky enough to work with and around some freaky talented kids athletically. (We made the national finals at both junior and intermediate levels in athletics this year and have a lot of kids uber talented in their own sport). I love strength sports and If it turns out these kids can't make it in their current sport then I'd encourage all of them to give them a go, but when one of your ex athletes wins European 100m golds, well I know which one i'd want to do!

Well, on the US forums they often state that their best hopes of Olympic medals in WL are probably sat on an NFL bench somewhere. I think there is some merit to this, but I think it is probably more likely that guy is working in an office or factory instead.

That bench could be fake, but I have no problem with the idea of someone benching 515 for a triple, even at that age. As for the smiles it seems to be seen as very much a 'Team' thing, showing off their outlier.

Not 100% sure what the point of this post is, I've had a rough night.

Unless it's rugby your best of heading for the states of your a big strength athlete. Lawrence Okoye is a great example. NFL mega bucks is the ultimate carrot

The unfortunate thing about amazing athletes is that they can often be pretty awesome at whatever you tell them to do.
The genetically gifted bas***ds.

I always thought powerlifting tended to get these athletes in the long term anyway. once they were too old or injured to play a real sport they take up powerlifting to keep the competitive element alive.

I agree. If certainly would never encourage a super gifted athlete into lifting if they had interests elsewhere.

However I would suspect in British (and U.S.) many of the genetically best athletes for weightlifting and powerlifting may well miss out on sports altogether. If I was to look for an ideal (non heavy weight) lifter they would probably be too short to be any good at most other sports.
