Thursday 31st March

Today was supposed to be a scheduled MAX day, but bearing in mind my back, and with my eye on next weekend's competition, I decided against it. Rather than messing around for a week and a half, I decided to jump straight into my next training cycle and test the waters a little on deadlift...

Block 1, week 1, session 1

Squat low bar
60kg x 5
100kg x 5
137.5kg x 9, 9, 9

Seated DB press
27.5kg x 8
37.5kg x 13, 10

Bench press
60kg x 5
92.5kg x 9, 9, 9

Deadlift
60kg x 3
100kg x 3
140kg x 1
160kg x 7, 7

I left out the third and final planned set of deadlifts, as:

a) I was already very happy to be able to deadlift pain free - I was just very careful not to hyper-extend at the top
b) I was running a bit late to pick the kids up
c) I was absolutely knackered due to a massive 3 course meal plus lager and mocha an hour before
d) I didn't want to push my luck!

Overall very pleased!

Saturday 2nd April

Back has been pretty stiff since Thursday's deadlifts...

Break the Bar Gym

Block 1, week 1, session 2

Squat low bar
60kg x 5
100kg x 5
140kg x 2
147.5kg x 7, 7, 7, 7

Got through these OK but the back felt 'dodgy'.

Bench press
60kg x 5
100kg x 7, 7, 7, 7

Yoke
130kg x 20m, 20m
210kg x 20m + 20m
270kg x f

I remember thinking on the 210kg, "This is heavy enough for today. Just take it nice and steady and don't try to go too fast or any heavier." Then I loaded 270kg! I couldn't pick it up - back said, "No."

Viking press
40kg x 5 strict
70kg x 5
100kg x 1 Back didn't like this at all so left I there at one dodgy rep.

Comp is looming next week. If my back is in this state I'm going to do terribly. This week needs to be all about getting ready for the weekend, so definitely no more deadlifts, keep up the anti-inflammatories along with the stretching and mobility and see how it is...

LOL I don't know about that Jon. they won't know who I am, and if I turn up with my back like it was yesterday they'll just enjoy kicking my behind!

Andy - I presume quite a lot, but it isn't going to happen. He is not the man he claims to be.

Robbo - you're dead right! I'm just so desperate to kick on and make gains, that I thought I wouldn't waste any time and get right on to my next training cycle. But I agree with you and need to rest to let my back fully heal, which I'm 60% confident it can before next Sunday, as long as I'm smart with it. It's probably a good thing the comp is now, because if it wan't I may be tempted to carry on training and not rest my back. So at least it gets a week of respite now to hopefully get better. I'll jump into the next training cycle after the comp instead. Happy

I appreciate what you're trying to do, but if he is unable to pay £100 for a bet, there is no way on this earth he would be allowed to pay £200! And one thing's for sure - he won't be pulling 240kg x 20 reps any time (ever), so there's no point at all in making another 'bet'.

Back has steadily improved over the last few days. I'd say there's now a 65% chance it will be good to go at the comp.

Back has not been good this week. Quite a lot of stiffness and a few 'tweaks'. I've started back at work so have been standing up a lot and not able to do much mobility or stretching. It's pretty stiff and I reckon I have about a 50% chance of making it through Sunday unscathed. Will just have to warm up thoroughly and keep my fingers crossed.

Kept Thursday's session really ligh so as not aggravate it...
