I'll probably want to bench, but if we're in a commercial gym there should be no problem doing both.

Wednesday 20/12

Squat (goblet) 22.5x5, 30x5, 45x5, (barbell back) 60x5, 80x3, 100x2, 120x1, 130x1, 140x1, 150x1, 120x1.

The 150 was pleasingly easy - it certainly didn't feel like 94% of my 1RM. The 120 was going to be the first of a couple of sets of five, but the right knee that had been troubling me since the 60 set flared up and I chose discretion as the better part.

I've not tried goblet squats before. I think I like them.

DB press 20x8, 37.5x6, 37.5x7 PB. First PB for a LONG time...

Narrow Seated Rows 112x6x2. Again, technically a PB but only because it's a new movement.

Chins 3x partial reps (about halfway up), then -5x3, sloppily.

Stretch - with less knee pain than expected, though it's still sore - and home.

Friday 22/12

Slightly thrown by a maniac almost killing me on my way to the gym with some particularly exceptional driving, and then thrown again by pulling up and getting out of the car to see a suspect-looking puddle underneath it. Last time I arrived at the gym to such a puddle, it cost me £800 to put right. All fluid levels seemed normal, so I went to lift and tried to forget about it. Not entirely successfully.

Deadlifts 60x8, 100x3, 140x1, 160x1, 180x1, 190xf. I should have got this, but I just lost interest part-way up. Not really focused tonight.

Narrow-grip pulldowns 70x8, 105x6x2.

Assisted chins -15x3x2.

It's not bench day, but it will be a while til I lift again, so

Bench Press 60x8, 100x1, 110x1, 120x1, 130xf. Lost the line, but the strength is definitely there.

Lots of lovely stretching. Absolutely no knee trouble at all, which is lovely.

And the Lovemobile seems fine, which is also lovely.

I suppose two narrow fails on two lifts 5kg below my PBs isn't too bad shortly after a illness layoff. And, speaking of layoffs, that's it for at least a week, since I'm away.

Rather to my surprise, the Sugden was absolutely dead tonight. There were about six other people lifting in total the whole time I was there, and most of the time there were only two or three people in the weight room and nobody at all doing cardio.

The Bench Brothers (you know who I mean) also complained of being out of sorts. Which, for the larger one, meant something like 180x1 (without any warmups, straight off the street), 160x3, 140x6, 120x10, and then the no-rest drop set of 70x20, 60x15, 50x10, 40x10, 20x20, 60x3. Madness.

Maybe he felt out of sorts because he did 180x3 (without warmup) on Wednesday.

He really doesn't impress me at all. He trains like an idiot.

His strength does, I admit, impress me, but I agree that his training methods are a torn pec waiting to happen. Benching 180 without warmup three times a week is gonna hurt you pretty soon, surely.

And on that note, I'm orf. Merry thingy, everyone.

And I'm back. Christmas this year was greatly enlivened by something going rather wrong in my back on Christmas Day afternoon, as I leaned over *very slightly* to pick something up from on top of my bed. I don't know if there was an audible noise or not, but something let go for no apparent reason and left me moving less fluently even than usual for the next several days.

It's most of the way right now. I guess that unprovoked back problems means that I am now officially no longer a young man. Hey ho.

Rob - are you training anywhere on Sunday? I kind of hope I'll be up to it.

This is, to be honest, getting right on my tits (which are not inconsiderable, to be fair). I can cope with being hurt after *doing something*, like, say, f**king up a deadlift, or even cycling down a hole. But leaning over slightly to pick up a vitamin pill...

Backs are bas***ds.

Yes, I was indeed collecting up my pre-Christmas-dinner pills. That's what I call f**king ironic, Alanis.

Tuesday 2/1

Bit of a mixed session to start back.

Squat Goblet bwx5, 30x5, 50x5, Barbell 60x5, 80x5, 100x5x3

All the sets were very easy, but I was absolutely f**ked at the end. My legs were sore, too. Ten days off when I'm working is very different to ten days off sitting in a chair eating lots Happy.

Bench 20x8, 60x5, 80x3 (all paused), 100x8x2. Nice and smooth and easy.

Wide Pulldowns 70x8, 84x10x2.

Wide Seated Rows 91x10x2.

Ten minutes of stretching and home, knackered.

In very good news, both my back and my knees felt great. I am beginning to wonder if the back trouble I had over Christmas was some sort of adhesion from a previous pull letting go - I feel like I've got freer motion in the lower back and hips than I've had for months.

Forgot to mention - as well as seeing joni, adam, jo, alex (in passing as I left and he arrived) and several non-board regulars, I also had lots of chat with, scrutinised squats for, and spotted on bench my favourite person to spot on bench Happy.
