normal people, like me. Member 2325, 550 posts | Post Edited: 12.04.2012 @ 11:44 AM by IainT Definitely don't have the gift, in fact have the anti-gift really. But, I enjoy it and it helps me stay reasonably healthy. But, I have decided in the last year or so to cut down the time a bit, and try not to f**k myself up in pursuit of things that are likely beyond me. For a time I wanted to be the strongest person with my condition, but now I just want to be able to squat, run up stairs and do chin-ups 10 years from now. Doing that in 20 would be fantastic.

I wouldnt have understood that in my early 20's though! no offence sam but I think your mate is right. working the doors just so I could train doesnt sound like a good long term life plan to me! maybe he is saying that because he doesnt want you to to waste you potential rather than being jealous of you?

no really Irish Member 1196, 5908 posts SQ 312, BP 230, DL 320862.0 kgs @ 114kgs UnEq | Gingy said:100 years from now you will be dead. 10,000 years from now (which seems like a long time but in the grand scale of stuff it's not even the blink of an eye) everyone you know will be well dead and also well forgotten, whether they could bench 300kg or they were worth £3 Billion. Currently there are close to 2 Billion people in China and they give as much of a s**t about you as an individual as you do about each of them as individuals. There is only pressure on you to be "great" if you decide to conform to someone else's model of what great is. The ONLY thing you can do for the next 80 years (being optimistic) is have a good time, not living with fear of underachieving, because not one of us actually will achieve anything of true "significance." If you have true passion for something, that's more than the majority of people can even comprehend. I'd say I'm passionate but am, hypocritically, too afraid of letting everyone else down in other avenues of life to discover whether I actually have a gift (although I doubt I do...). At least you're giving yourself a f**king good chance of knowing this for sure! Keep smashing it Sam, for as long as it makes you happy. If there's some c**t who makes you feel bad for it just remember he'll be dead and cold for just as long as you are (f**king ages) and the universe will not remember his fantastically mediocre career Good post.

I actually agree Will, however, just to play devils advocate if Sam enjoys working the doors, has enough money to spend on the things he wants to spend it on and enough to pay the bills then ultimately, why bother doing anything else?

Fair point, bit you need to plan for later in life as well, being the boring old fart here, but I don't think bouncing is gonna provide for you and your family in your old age (correct me if i'm wrong) but you need summat that can give you that option I think

I think I am genetically gifted in some areas due to my build (pressing) - but the same attributes (short arms, short torso etc) mean that deadlifting doesn't come naturally to me. Poor flexibility and cardio puts me at a disadvantage in some things but this is down to me being lazy and not working on them. This needs to change this year. I am guilty of working harder on my strengths than our weaknesses (most of us do this). In my opinion someone giving me 'the gift' would be to quite simply increase my deadlift by 40-50kg. Would give me a chance at becoming a decent strongman and of totalling big in raw PL.

Member 2407, 219 posts | If I had a time machine id do loads differently but number 1 would be a trade or uni. If everything else goes to s**t you can get through it as long as your earning. I would have struggled like f**k with the paperwork or been skint on an apprenticeship for 3/4 years but in the long run better off.

Yeah my age does have a lot to do with it. My mate used to do exactly the same as me a few years ago but when the gains stopped for him he moved on. Maybe he genuinely cares, maybe he is being a cock, hard to say with this one. If I got injured and couldn't work or lost my badge, I would be f**ked - so he does have a point. My current lifestyle is the best for making gains in the gym, though.

I made this thread to discuss passion vs genetics, and whether people consider it worthwhile to put so much into training if they don't think they have 'the gift'. I'm happy with 'life' as a whole.

As long as you appreciate that there are some who are more gifted and may beat you with less effort. As Gingy said, you should do everything for personal satisfaction cos you'r a long time dead and can't turn back time
