To get the most out of your legs when benching should you be driving them such that your arse is just about coming off the bench (but still touching)? Or using them to drive your arse into the bench to give a more concrete base?

There should be no weight at all on your arse, everything should be through shoulders and feet.

If you're driving your arse into the bench, then are your feet on a low ceiling above the bench? Drive so your arse feels like it's going to lift up.

What federation do you compete in?

A strong arch with two bases ,imagine one being the feet another being the upper shoulder blades the arse irs irrelevant other than for the fact that it needs to be touching the bench for the referees to be happy.

Lol point taken, thanks for the clarification. When I said 'into the bench' before I meant more 'along the bench' to reinforce the arch, but I'll try and do this using the feet instead from now on! And it's the GBPF I plan to compete in.

no it just needs to touch mate, no need to use it to better the arch. The GBPF are the strictest of judges so make sure the feet dont move either .

The certainly are. I once got a red light from a side ref because my right foot, which remained planted throughout the lift, was touching the leg of the bench press.

touching the leg of the bench press with your foot is known to add at least 50kg to your lift!

The feet moving should not be cause for a red, i believe the IPF rule is that movement of the feet during the lift is allowed providing the foot stays in contact with the floor

ie the foot can slide forward/backward to either side, but not lift up at all

Remember to keep up ankle/calf flexibility. The reason I was asking is because in some federations, you're allowed to be on your toes instead of having the whole foot planted. Footwear will make some difference to you, such as oly shoes (if you have any)

As far as I'm aware, no federation will allow the foot to be in contact with any part of the bench whilst lifting, so Sam's red light was well within the rulebook and the ref was just following the rules.

Ah yes, good point. I'm aware that BPC (??) + others allow you to be on toes. I do usually bench in my oly shoes and I find it helps (with my incorrect leg drive technique at least lol) as you say!

I got a red light for sliding my foot on carpet when my arch flattened out in a comp I wasn't side of the exact ruling at the time

What feds can you can bench without your feet being flat?

I currently bench with my legs out in front of me, feet flat on the floor because if I tuck them under, although I get a bigger arch and feel tight, my heels are nowhere near the floor.
