I actually managed to briefly watch some WL today and saw some ladies cleaning and jerking weights in the region of my floor to overhead PB Grin

This!

Scary weights being thrown around.

Is this the biggest weight class for the women?

Great contest. Down to the wire. One woman just hit a 155 CJ.
The other needs 161 to win it.

i havent watched all of it, but smalls it seems like the nigerians are pretty good at commonwealth level despite what seems to my less trained eye, lesser technique...

What do u think?

My observation is that all African nations and connected athletes (a lot of Australians are African lifters who moved) have incredible power, nigh on world class power. But as you said, they lack the consistency and discipline in their lifting that sets the Russians and Chinese of the weightlifting world apart from these guys. Half these guys were power snatching and doing speed squats with their maximum cleans, I was shocked at how strong some of these dudes were. But then the technical problems come in, like a lot of them had bent arms on the snatches and cleans to a large degree, very looping bars on the snatch and so on.

So you are spot on, Cameroon is another similar situation. Some of the Australian lifters are from there and they are all much the same style, brilliant power, very wide jerk grips, etc.

India on the other hand seems like a very well trained team, a lot of great technicians in there, even though they did not have the physiques or speed of some of the other lifters, they had great rhythm and precision in their lifting.

Cracking competition for all the medals today. Was hoping Usman or Opeloge might be pushing towards 300kg, but we still have a few months to go until the Worlds.

Many of the lifters we've seen are pretty much like many of the guys on here - those who have come to Oly lifting late and are much "stronger" than their totals reflect.

Ben Watson showing the world how the snatch. Absolutely brilliant, efficient movements. 147, 152 good lifts. One more to come.

Ben Watson smashes 3/3 finishing on 157. Every one as good as the other, this guy is a great technician.

Ben Watson finishes first in the snatch. Awesome display of skill, 3/3. He is also lightest. There was me thinking I jinxed it by saying he was my darkhorse for a medal early on.

Second place and third place are even at 155. Then its 148 for a guy with a 200 CJ opener. Then 146, 145.

Ben nails 180 opener for a 337 total. 2 more to come.

Go on Ben! I say again, he is a great technical lifter, very very impressed. I think he deserves a medal here today. He is definitely close to securing it.
