Just a Friday-Sunday trip mate.

Only been once before with my Mum when I was about 10.

No kids, just me and Mrs BenMac. Nothing too fancy food-wise, just whatever's good.

Then do all the cliché things because it's good.

If it's whilst the festival is on just hammer that

If it's after, the castle is good but quite steep to get in £12-15 off top of my head, the national museum is great and free to get in, the top of Arthur's seat if it's sunny has some great views, if you like photography you'll have a lot of fun in the camera obscurer, it's about £11 to get in but I really enjoyed it

The shore and Stockbridge are a short bus journey away and much better to drink and eat in than George St (the main club area)

Royal mile itself has some tourist pubs but a couple of ok ones

There's loads a very pleasant little french places to eat but go to the mosque kitchen for sure, in the back of the mosque a short walk from you, great curry

It's literally in the back of the mosque, you eat outside on benches under a canopy, it's not the most refined but it's Damn good curry made by people who make a lot of curry, £8 will buy youa few curries naan and a side

The dungeons are good too and the majority of bus tickets have either a 2for or money off deal. If it's a nice day a seat in Princess St gardens is good, add street food to that and it's great!

If your in edinburgh in time for the festival just get stuck into that.

Mosque kitchen is a great place for lunch, plenty of good pubs kicking around.

If you like Metal, Ale and massive portions of food the Auld hoose on the pleasance is a great wee pub to chuck your neck in. Also the pear tree has a massive beer garden and is close.

During the festival you have to head into george square and the pleasance massive open air places with food, beer and comedy.

National musem is great, castle is worth a punt (half a day spent there probaby) Dynamic earth is a good visit. If you like a day of walking the zoo is worth a look.

On the royal mile Whiskey rooms is a nice place a bit pricey but it is on the Royal mile.

Surely the number one thing to do in Edinburgh is to go to the Uni gym?

Another vote for the Mosque kitchen. That place is the bomb. If you're their during the festival you certainly won't struggle to find stuff to do, just the street performers alone are awesome!

Cheers boys, much appreciated.

Going to be post-festival, so the itinerary will be something like:

Friday night - food and a few beers
Sat am - the touristy stuff
Sat pm - food then booze
Sun - maybe a roast somewhere then home

Not sure the Mrs would appreciate a trip the gym unfortunately!

Had a boss weekend up there just gone.

Early wander round Princes Gardens followed by a great brekkie at Urban Angel Sat a.m, then the Castle followed by afternoon tea at The Dome before a few slurps and a big bowl of nachos at the Auld Hoose. Did one of those underground "haunted Edinburgh" walks on Sat night, which was a bit lame but pretty interesting to walk through the tunnels.

Sunday was National Portrait Gallery and Holyrood.

Never managed to get to Mosque Curry unfortunately, although did see what I assume was a rip-off / spin-off takeaway with the same name whilst walking to the Auld Hoose.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

glad you enjoyed it

fyi,
there was a kitchen in the mosque (the aptly named mosque kitchen). the kitchens got renovated so they borrowed a premises on the corner and kept the place open. then once completed they kept the 2 running and theres a bit of a rivalry now, some kind of split in the mosque

personally i prefer the old one, the food is almost the same but the service is friendlier
