i only seem to use the white bands these days, despite the fact that i am a finger extension specialist.

You need to eat the crisps before and after finger extending. Before so you get a bloat from the salt and then after for the insulina spike.

I had some crisps at work and also some lasagne (although not leftover), and I'm going to do some speed work with the green band before bed.

I did a set of 12 with a white band on one hand and a green on the other, for maximal finger extensor confusion.

This was followed by a few failed singles on the higher bands, and lots of "pinging"

Are normal rubber bands any good for this, or do you need to use the specialised ones with individual finger slots for maximum extensor gains?

Paul Savage uses a normal elastic band. I think FAT_SAM (another grip beast) has mentioned using one too. I have the Ironmind coloured bands. They don't have finger slots.

Suspended on the end or a plate right up to the base? If the latter i bet i can take 5kg with ease.

Suspended at the end but short dicks will make this easier so we need a coefficient. I'm coining in the Wanks coefficient.

Edit: There should be tested and untested events.
