...when a couple of guys are breezing through. How could this be achieved?

This is obviously why these silly/unfair stone rule variations are introduced.

Ideas?

Counterpoint: why should heats (or any other phase of the competition) be exciting? Why should better athletes effectively be penalized?

I thought the idea of two wildcard places for the top third place finishers like they had a couple of years back worked fine.

They replaced that with double points for stones though and now appear to have gone full retard with the new stones system.

In all sports better teams or athletes tend to breeze through the heats. I don't see why it is an issue.

It never appears that badly at WSM..UK strongest man it does.

Consider one super-group with the top 6 seeded athletes in it. All Other athletes randomly assigned to the other groups. This would level the playing field in the heats but make for a poor final.

Not having knowledge of all the events and a familiarity with the athletes makes it better imo. Also not knowing the results before you watch it, and reading debates about who's done more drugs etc.
I much preferred it when it was pretty much impossible to find out anything about it till it was on tv at Xmas. Or Easter (or was it summer) for Britains strongest man.
I remember years ago trying to find out when and where BSM was being held.
That's when it was at its best. The Bill Pittuck era.

Make groups based on seeding - works on other sports, however don't give them events ahead of time.

Have a big lucky dip and each athlete from each group selects an exercise from the bag. Five per group, five totally random exercises - as such one group might get nothing but deadlift variations and another nothing but moving events, most would get a mix but there would be more intrigue for each group on TV as people would be excited by what events might occur and the randomness might throw some surprises on who qualifies

Same thing for final events - each qualifier at the end the two who qualified get to dip and pick an event for the final - make for more suspense on TV

I don't know if this'd work at WSM level, but some sort of golf handicap for 1st and second time qualifiers. I used to do a bit of track racing in Herne Hill and it really got everyone cheering when an underdog nearly beat a Team GB person to the line in local race. Pushed both to compete harder. I know WSM is meant to be another level, bit theres such a gulf between 1-5 and the new guys.

They shouldn't do anything other than drop the double points on the stones which has always struck me as retarded.

Wild card spots for top 3rd place guys is actually a good shout, but wouldn't change the top guys taking it easy if they can.

Drop the heats to 5 events.

Make sure the heats are balanced.

Better variety of events

EG - one lifting, one carrying, one grip, one combat and one mass moving event per heat.

Rather than effectively what we have now is 2 lifting, 2 loading/carrying, 2 mass moving.

Have a longer final with two pressing events.
