Wednesday, 23rd May, start 16:10

Another very warm day.

Bench, very raw
20 x 15
20 x 15
20 x 15
20 x 15
20 x 15
40 x 5
50 x 5
60 x 5
70 x 5
80 x 5
90 x 5
100 x 5
110 x 5
115 x 5

Close grip
65 x 8
75 x 8
85 x 8
95 x 8

Two weeks ago I did 117 x 5, then last week was the Cornelius Tempingtons, tonight everything up to and including the 100 set felt really easy, the 110 felt a good deal heavier than the one before it and the 115 was difficult but not much more so that the 110, but there wasn't a 120 at any price.

This has caused me to maybe have an idea.

It is my intention to ditch the Sunday workouts for a while so I will now bench only once a week. I will alternate the weeks between Cornelius Tempingtons and regular bench. I cannot be sure that this will achieve anything of note, but I strongly suspect that it might. It does no harm to trust one's instincts every once in a while. Even mine.

The knee has been quite cheerful today, as a direct result of this, so has the rest of me

Three weeks tomorrow I will go to see Billy Joel at Old Trafford, it will be my first concert since watching Deep Purple at the Free Trade Hall when I was seventeen. Excitement therefore exists albeit in only trace amounts, but from tomorrow it will start to build

75 x 8
100 x 8
125 x 8
150 x 8
175 x 8
175 x 8
175 x 8
175 x 8
175 x 8

Tbar shrug, still pounds
150 x 10
175 x 10
200 x 10
200 x 10
200 x 10
200 x 10
200 x 10

Pulldown to chest, wide grip, back to kilos
50 x 10
60 x 10
70 x 10
70 x 10
70 x 10
70 x 10
70 x 10

Not many down tonight, but there was enough, someone has started painting the inside room of the gym and no-one knew who until Stevie F appeared with the latest word on the street. I wonder how long that will take ?

Didn't you go seeing Carl Douglas once?

Yes and No. That was at the Nevada on Spa road in Bolton, but it wasn't to go and see him, it was just a night at the Nevada and he was there, the entry cost was the same as when he wasn't there. I don't reckon anyone would have paid anything or gone anywhere just to see him, so folk went about their business while that talentless fellow sang the same song repeatedly. Deep Purple and Billy Joel are different, I am going to see them, that is the reason I am leaving the house. That is why the money was paid, why the ticket was bought. That to me makes all the difference. Nice try though, well remembered.

It's OK Pete - you can admit to going to see Carl Douglas, we won't think any less of you.

Giving up gambling has had the unexpected benefit of decent lie in on a Saturday, it was gone eight before I stumbled out of my pit this morning. Had been getting a shade warm at night in the past week, so changed the bedding and loaded the summer duvet. Gentlemen, summer is officially here.

Were you a good roller skater Pete, and could you do any tricks like going backwards? I imagine that you would have had the appearance of an advert for Silvikrin in slow motion with your long hair at the time, whilst harbouring the menace of James Caan.

If you answer no to the first question we can pretty much forget the rest of it, but I hope you don't and my illusions are not shattered.

The hardest thing I ever did on skates was to walk downstairs wearing them while holding three, straight pint pots full of beer.

To answer the question, I was never more than competent going forwards and never entertained let alone attempted going backwards. Sorry to disappoint

I think 3 pints downstairs trumps going backwards empty handed, especially if it was performed sans tray. Also it's less selfish as you get to give a pint to two mates and have one yourself, if you want to of course.

It was indeed sans tray. Handled glasses would have made matters much easier, but straight was all they had. I have wondered if the awkwardness was a factor in them buying that type of glass

Angry

Sunday, 27th May

An unusual day, left home at the usual time, checked the tyre pressures, drove to Adders, walked to the pub and had a rather splendid lamb shank, chips and peas, had a pleasant chat with the locals, walked back to the car and drove home. Not of that training nonsense, but it was rather an usual feel to the day. As it is Summer and the sun is shining it was quite a reasonable thing to do today, Winter will be a different kettle of fish I suspect.

Monday, 28th May, start 15:20, Late May bank holiday

To celebrate the bank holiday I had a bonus visitor last night, she left about eleven, I made a cup of tea and watch a couple of episodes of the Inbetweeners and then stumbled off to bed and slept like a dead man, up a shade after eight this morning, usual weetabix for breakfast and a McDonalds for lunch. It is hot gentle reader, very hot, hotter then the seventh level of Hell. No tracky bottoms tonight, the cycling shorts are back

Squat, raw, sleeves and boots on
20 x 5
20 x 5
20 x 5
20 x 5
20 x 5
60 x 3
80 x 3
100 x 3
belt on
120 x 3
140 x 3
150 x 3
160 x 3
170 x 3
180 x 1
These were all pretty good tonight and the knees did not grumble. Can anyone tell me what eyebrows are for ? I always thought that they were to deflect sweat away from the eyes, if so, my don't work very well. The 180 single was a little bank holiday bonus for me, I asked April to depth nazi and as my first rep is usually my worst I informed her that if the first on this occasion was as good as the second and third usually are she was to tell me and I would let myself off the last two, it was, she told me, so I stopped. It is a bank holiday after all and I am as close to actually melting as I have been for a long while. Another encouraging session and I am grateful for it.

In case anyone was wondering about my lack of progress I have a tale to tell. When I was young and foolish I would take thing easy if they hurt, but once they stopped hurting I would be off like a bull at a gate once more, Now that I am old and foolish I know that there is no wisdom in this. I now know that there is a period of no pain but you are still in recovering. It is during this period that one much resist all urges to go charging off again and keep the beast on a tight leash until recovery is complete and then we can let it go once more.
