Bit of a strange topic perhaps... what real life benefits do you get from your strength training - be you weightlifter, powerlifter or strongman? (or any other kind of athlete)

I've always been pretty keen on getting 4-5 days a week of strength training and then reaping the benefits in terms of feeling generally better on a daily basis, but recent issues such as a recurring shoulder and knee injury plus taking on more responsibility work-wise and other developments in personal life mean I have far less time to train. Perhaps time to look at a 3 day a week split or something....

None

I keep thinking I should drop to 3 days a week but invariably end up going 4 to 5 for some reason

Plus I'm old now (33) so 3 days a week would suit me better I think, I need to make the switch

Mainly...a smug sense of being stronger than mostly everyone else.

Also, never unhappy to get my tits out. i.e body confidence is not an issue since I started lifting years ago...resulting in an ability to talk to girls with no issue where others may not be able to due to lower self esteem.

Alos, an instinctive and thus almost innate sense of heath resulting in subconscious food regulation driven by vanity mainly Roll-Eyes

It's no coincidence that I'm the strongest person at my place of work and the most adept at carrying out physical restraints.

and you also have a calmness about you.

No doubt part due to the confidence that single rep zercher squatting brings?

I am known for my calmness, no matter what chaos is going on. I'm not sure how you know that though!

I think there's a link between strength and confidence (although not always) and, as zercher is my main strength movement, I guess there's a link in my case between zerchering and confidence!

A visit to the gym gives me an average of 4 hours away from Mrs C.

I believe recent studies have shown resistance training to be very good for mental health.

I do manual work in the woods. Helps a lot. Lifting stuck trailers, hauling trees, moving rocks, unsticking landrovers, hauling gear up lines, unsticking stuck metalwork. It helps with all that stuff.

I know a lot of people with f**ked backs, but no lifters. And in terms of joint injuries, at least we're not runners.

I think there's a lot to be said for it as a meditative, devotional practice.

There are people at the club and in BPL I care about.

That's most of it, for me. Sure, I'm stronger than the people around me, but it's that actually useful? Not so much, for me.

The biggest *health* benefit for me is seeing my mates. I work from home and don't currently live with my missus (at least not for the next 7-weeks) so if I didn't go to the gym I could easily go days without speaking to anyone on anything other than a business level. That would drive me potty!

1hr in the gym chatting s**t is like having 4-5 pints with the lads, just without any fuzzy head the next day.

It's a good form of controlled aggression, without the risk - fun though it is - associated with combat sports.

I find it also brings a moderate sense of achievement, which can be in the face of all other things life throws at you.

Physical and physiological benefits: absolutely none - no doubt reducing my life expectancy over what it could be if I was average in weight and following my 40-something middle-class peer's lifestyle of cycling, travel, healthy eating whilst smugly reading The Guardian Grin

But I suffered and still do from severe depression and all that 'nothing in excess' goes out the window - intense training and associated modalities are sometimes the one thing that gives purpose and reason to life when everything else seems futile. Mental health benefits are enormous to me.
