I have no problem with "fish supper" or "sausage supper" et al, it makes sense to me. But I am told that "a single fish" will get you two fish, and this I do not understand.

matthewvc said:Lived in Scotland for a few years. All chip shops must have at least one fruit machine, sell booze and fags, open very early until late, deep fry in batter everything, don't do gravy, 'babbies yeds' or pea-wet, have distilled vinegar, you must ask for 'a chip' not chips, and any meal with 'a chip' at any time of the day is 'a supper'

That is of interest and I thank you for it. Nonsense like this always appeals.

I care little about what they call it, my understanding was that a "fish supper" was what was asked for when walking home from the pub and could be either eating as one walked or taken home and eaten there. The Scots have done this and are welcome to it, we do exactly that same thing but never uttered the phrase "fish supper". I have more bags of fish and chips on the way home from a night out than I can remember, I just never called it a fish supper, I don't intend starting now.

Bye the bye, I have heard many times that folk of the Wigan and Bolton area (and I am one) use the term "babbie's yed" for a steak pudding, yet I have never heard it used in a chip shop, nor have I ever used, or even considered using it myself.

That makes no sense whatsoever. Dare I suggest that it is "Horatio Strangeington" ?

I am reminded of a tale of forty years ago or so. I was working in a local pub as a barman and there was a sudden and rather ephemeral craze for drinking halves of bitter and lager mixed.

I had no objection to this concoction but the people who drank it gave it a name, which would of made sense if they had all given it the same name, but they didn't, they just invented one for themselves and then asked for that. It was assumed of course that as a barman you would have magically absorbed this knowledge out of the ether so when they asked for it you would know what it was.

Anyone who asked for bitter and lager mixed was regarded as odd.

Anyone who asked for "Sunset", "Golden", "Twilight" or "Chinese" was regarded as a dog's penis

I haven't. I used to know a chap who was far better versed in rural pursuits than I was. So I am familiar with the practice. It removes the bo***cks without damaging the scrotum if I recall correctly. How difficult is it to get the goat to comply with this procedure ? I would have assumed that as soon as he realizes that you are heading for his taters he will get seriously scary.

No training again today, but Joe the Terrible was there so I went along for a catch-up. We wandered off to the Spinners afterwards for some dinner and then on my return to the club Stevie F had appeared to do things with some left over rubber matting. I decided that I would shift some bars that had been moved due to the room being painted and were rather in the way. I quickly split them into two lots, those that get used and those that don't. The ones that do are in the corner, stored vertically, and the ones that don't have been stashed under the stairs. So ten bars in total and all to be moved, one at a time, to a point that was not so far away. Gentle reader I have never sweat so much in my life.

Monday, 11th June, start 16:15

Squat, raw, sleeves and boots on
20 x 5
20 x 5
20 x 5
20 x 5
20 x 5
60 x 3
80 x 3
belt on
100 x 3
120 x 3
140 x 3
160 x 3
170 x 2
180 x 1
190 x 3
First the good news - the knees were cheerful throughout. I cannot walk the bar out (yet) with the same confidence I once did, but the walkouts don't hurt either, I just think they might. Considering my knees used to weep with every rep this appears to be real progress. Once the walkouts don't require any thought, that will signal to refrain from the shackles of restraint and open the throttle a little. Now the bad news - that's all the good news there is.

Now a little more detail on the 190 triple, Jamie and Dave were spotting and assured me that the first two were good, the last one was a real grind and they had to concentrate more on my shaking, trembling mass and not so much on depth as we all felt that they actually might be needed on that one. They weren't needed however and after ten seconds or so I made it to the top of the squat and re-racked it. I never like squats like that but I do think that every now and then they do you good.

Plus of course if you are going to have questions asked about depth then the last one is the one to have them asked about. And if one is going to be unquestionably "in" then the first one is the one for that. I have had happier days but this will do, oh it will do nicely.

Cheers Billy, squatting is one of life's great pleasures. I have had as much fun squatting as all other exercises put together

Wednesday, 13th June, start 16:20

Bench, very raw
20 x 15
20 x 15
20 x 15
Now all in the manner of Cornelius Tempington
40 x 3
50 x 3
60 x 3
70 x 3
80 x 3
90 x 3
95 x 3
97 x 3
100 x 3
102 x 3
Omitted the 92 this week and replaced it with a 102, still not much fun to be had with these, but if they work it will be worth it

Close grip bench press
75 x 8
85 x 8
95 x 8
105 x 5
I surprised myself with a 102 for 8 last week so I upped it all a tad and gave it a go, never expected to get 8 with 105 but 5 will no nicely for now. Knees are still cheerful

A facebook friend and as it happens, a real one posted a picture of himself deadlifting 265 kilos ten years ago, it the background was me as I was loading that day. Whilst I did not look slim, I didn't look as fat as I do today. It was rather a startling realization. I therefore checked the mirror, I rarely use mirrors as they are no friend to me, and on the occasions I do it tends to be from the neck up. Today was different, it was head to toe and it was fairly horrible to look at.

I have become a grotesquely fat slob. I will therefore commence a diet, probably Monday.

Dieting is alien to me, so working on the premise that the best way to gain weight is to graze constantly throughout the day, I will turn that on its head and just eat three meals a day with nothing inbetween. The meals will remain much as they are now but all little tasty treats; biscuits, chocolate, cakes, crisps, etc will be gone. I will record a start weight and then record another in one month. Amendments will be made as and when necessary. This is of course assuming that I am man enough to manage this nonsense.

I have found that that is an excellent way to cut weight if you have the willpower. Good luck Pete, best way is to just not have those things in the house.
