I shamefully forgot to mention that the new PB is down to Mr Al for showing me how to bench properly.

Swindons Strongest Novice -

After a long old trip down on the Saturday night and a rubbish nights sleep in the finest of Travelodges concaved beds it was time to make my way to Pro Strength & Fitness Gym in Swindon for the competition. When I arrived there was quite a crowd gathered already and the buzz of anticipation in the air. If you have never been there, this is an impressive gym and well worth the visit with the bounty of strongman equipment. After getting changed into my t-shirt, scouting and getting ready it was time to begin with the first event.

Max Deadlift -

This started at a comfortable 180kg going up in 10kg jumps. After the first deadlift at 180kg that felt good I decided to skip 190kg going straight to 200kg this felt comfortable so decided to skip again and go for 220kg. The 220kg went up but not as quick and comfortable as I would like so I decided play safe and attempt 230kg instead of skip to my equal PB lift of 240kg like first planned. Up I stepped to 230kg up it went nice pull with minimal of my standard high end deadlift hitch so on to the 240 kg. After psyching myself up and tying my straps I got myself set and up it went, easier than I remember it being the last time. Finally I was up to 250kg the weight I had set in my mind that I wanted to hit coming into this comp as this was supposed to be the top lift before the 260kg cut off between the novice and intermediate but with a few competitors left in it had been changed to last man standing. Up I stepped to the bar nervous but psyched, determined to get this lift if my life depended. I chalked up and wrapped my straps as tight as I could, got to my feet and pulled with all my might! Up the bar came up to just above my knees where I got stuck like always but I wasn't giving this up without a fight so with a hitch like you have never seen and a fight that seemed to take an eternity I finally managed to get it locked out and the call came that the was good was met with a slight roar and a double fist pump in celebration. So it was on to 260kg, I thought I had nothing to lose so might aswell give it a go even though in my mind I didn't even think I would get it moving but to my surprise I broke the ground and got it to just below my knee but by this time my back was tight and it was just step to far after my previous lifts but on a fresh day I think it is a possibility.

Max Log -

My old nemesis the dreaded log! By now you probably know this isn't my favourite event but I was going to give it my all and hope for the best. The starting weight was 80kg, going up in 10kg increments up to 100kg then changing to 5kg increments. The 80kg and 90kg went up a dream so I had a bit of confidence going into the 100kg log which would be a 2kg PB. I managed the clean relatively comfortably and I set myself ready for the press, with a dip of the legs I started to the drive and to my delight up it went with a minimal fight to lock it out. With this new found confidence I stood with the 105kg log infront of me full of optimism, the clean went fine, I got myself set and tried to drive it up it started to move but got stuck halfway through the press I fought and managed to get my right arm locked, my classic lock sided lockout and after another fight I managed to get my left arm locked and got the down signal and there was another PB Grin I attempted the 110kg log but couldn't get the log in the position to fight the lockout so after 3 attempts I called it quits but not before I had tweaked my left knee/lower quad.

110kg head to head farmers walk -

This was about a 15 metre straight run and was done in pairs head to head. I was the 7th pair up against big Bill Moors. The start command and the pick went good and off I charged, neck and neck with Bill all the way crossing the line in a photo finish. I was timed at 7.5 seconds which was good enough for 6th or 7th.

90kg Block Press -

The event I was dreading more than any as I had never attempted it before which was not made any better by watching the majority of the competitors before me either fail or struggle to get 1 rep. I stepped up hoping for the best and got the block up to my chest for the first rep, I positioned my hand and drove with my legs and it started moving but to my horror just before the lockout the balance went and the block started to tip towards me slipping out my hands and falling to the floor with a thud nearly destroying the trophies in the process. I righted the block and cleaned it again, started the press and failed half way through with it first getting stuck on my head and then hitting me in the eye but I managed to catch it at chest level get it back in position but couldn't get it pressed and dropped it again. I managed one more clean but with no air and 5 seconds left I had to drop it and there it was my first event failure.

110kg Atlas Stone over yokes for reps -

Having only trained stones once and getting 2 reps anything over that number was a plus for me so I covered myself in tacky and awaited my turn which happened to be 12th. I grabbed the stone trying to remember the technique and advice taught by Mr Al and to my joy I managed to one motion the first to reps which came at a complete shock! I managed a further 3 reps having to lap it everytime but on the 6th attempt the stone had become so stuck to me I just ran out of time before I could get it over.

I came 10th in the end which I was pleased with as I wanted to hit the top 10. Overall I was happy with my performance and all my PBs but was gutted at not finishing an event for the first time but I suppose it had to happen some time. Now a few days rest then a couple of training sessions in the build up to Only the Strong will Survive on the 18th August.

Trying to get a video up but the videos are currently spread between 2 phones but Martin 'the real voice of strongman' Cee was there so hopefully he has footage up soon.
