2012 was the year i started training for strongman, roughly around August / September time.

Competed in my first comp (MuscleInc Strongman Summerslam)

Was in a head on car crash that put me out for a couple weeks

Found out my girlfriend is currently expecting our first chid together (a little boyGrin )

Moved to a new gym ready for the start of the new year to compete and go as far as i can in strongman.

Been a great year, started strongman training in January, added 50kg to squat and deadlift, came third at an inters comp and most importantly met some ace guys in the most supportive sport in the world.

2012
Well joined here in june and started lifting properly. Added 47.5kg onto my total in 6 months.
25kg onto my squat
7.5kg onto my bench bur havent really trained it
15kg onto my deadlift

Also log pressed and axled 120kg

Met some great guys who train at salt ayre

Done 3 comps
Yorkshires novice - few pbs fail on the sandbag and around 20th place
Salt ayre classic - much improved and 10th place overall in a strong field
Manchesters open class novice - 3rd place great result

My aims for 2013
Compete in northern quals u105.
Do naturals u105.
Log 140kg
Deadlift 300kg
Squat 240kg

Amitious but with some hard graft i feel the above is achievable

totally focused on.squats this year and added 20kg to my raw squat.

did 205 in April, messed up at the WDFPA single lift worlds but managed to PB a 220kg squat and 235kg deadlift this month in competition.

moved away from a westside style of training to 5x5 and progress sky rocketed - here's for 2013 where I want to get a three time bodyweight raw squat

Started the year at 160sq/135bench/200dl, in June I got to 200sq/150bench/230dl

Been ill a couple of times since then and motivation has gone down, the best I've done in the last few months is 170/140/220 - marginally better than 12 months ago but I'm not happy with it.

Struggling with numbers I've repped earlier this year is depressing and doesn't help with the motivation!

I expected more out of my competition results and PBs but had an ok year nonetheless. Managed to equal my squat PB in the gym and put an extra 5kg on my competition bench/deadlift.

Results for my 2 main competions were:

Came 2nd in the British Seniors 105kg (Equipped 787.5kg, 5kg off PB)
Came 1st in the British Classic 105kg (Unequipped 710kg, 7.5kg off PB at the time)

Feel like my unequipped hasn't really progressed since May last year (245/170/300 for 715), but I made some small progress at the Greater Londons last month going 240/175/305 for 720. I've finally found somewhere decent to train and really feel like I'm ready to make some big progress soon so looking forward to some PBs in 2013. Main aim for 2013 is to give a decent account of myself at the IPF Classic.

On the other hand I'm quite pleased with how I've done in my life away from training, graduated with a 1st earlier this year and managed to get a job within 2 months of sitting my last exam so in the grand scheme of things I really can't complain that much!

Feels like a long year!

Trained down at The Junction most weekends and really enjoyed that.Met loads of new people and got involved in reffing at comps which was educational.

Qualified for ESMU90k but did s**t, really pissed off with my performance and conduct .I did however manage to accidentally drink nose tork at this comp which was fun...

Qualified for ESMU105K ( through drop outs) and decided to do it at about 10pm the night before after 'some' cans. Drove down the next morning somewhat hung over and came dead last but had a real blast!

Won The Bulldog Bash U90k probably weighing around 95k! Roll-Eyes and had a great laugh with Jnr at the strippers tent on the night Eek

The highlight by a mile was jointly winning Dragons IV.DragonsI was my first ever comp and I always said if I could win any comp it would be this one.I've had some great and frankly emotional times at Dragons comps ( filled up with pride watching Jnr do his first competitive stone run at DragonsII) and to tie with the Shane, who is one of the strongest U90k's in Europe must mean I have something to offer at this game!

After my competitive season was over I managed to pull a 290k deadlift and a 100k strict press which were both pleasant surprises and made me feel confident of fighting hard for places next year. Next news I've torn my f**king pec and have no idea if I will make a proper recovery and lift heavy again.

Recent injury aside I've had a good year training and competing with some of the best lads I've ever had the pleasure of meeting and strongman continued to provide my with great pleasure.

Jnr put 120k FTOH at 17yrs old and about 80k bodyweight, pulled 245k then wrapped it all in for wine , women and song Roll-Eyes

Started the year focusing on Strongman, having become bored of PL, and did my first ever comp (Northern's u90)

Enjoyed it and met some great lads, also woke me up to just how strong 90kg can be. Competing with the likes of Shane, Trav and the rest of the northern beasts was a big eye opener!

Wrestled with loads of old injuries during the strongman and wasn't convinced it was sustainable though.

Olympics came around and I was totally in awe of the blokes on the WL platform. Decided to dedicate myself to the lifts properly (having toyed with it since I started this crap) and have never been more frustrated and fulfilled at the same time with training ever before.

Snatch has gone from 80 to 91 and my CJ is just now starting to really respond I think! Can't wait for 2013 and sinking myself into some comps. Think I've finally found the strength sport I enjoy most! Athough it's probably the one I'm worst suited for....

2012 well I became a dad for the first time and it IS amazing. My training has suffered on and off but enough moaning.....

I started doing the juggernaut routine earlier this year but it got too much and packed it in!

Comps wise did

  • northern naturals u90 came 6th

  • britains naturals u90 came 10th

  • manchesters strongest man novices 9th

Struggled as always with my shoulders back and neck and currently down to training just once a week in gym due to family commitments.

Put some weight on in last few months it's helped static lifts but feel s**t. Everything hurts all the time lol

Highlights in terms of lifts

200kg squat belt and wraps
200kg x 3 squat in wraps

200kg x 10 deadlift no straps
220kg x 11 deadliest with straps

117.5kg bench with sleeves

100kg log press probably never to be repeated or actually caught on film....

It has been a low profile year for me in competition terms, but I achieved everything I set out to and put things in place for a good 2013. I have also confirmed to myself - finally - that less really is more for me when it comes to training events.

I Started training for the UKSC Midlands qualifier in January, with the sole real aim of getting the 300kg squat and making the cut after the first three events. I spent the final 8 weeks training the squat twice weekly in briefs and generally focussing on static, static and static. Very little event work was done. This focus on static strength seemed to work well on the day, as it was a very heavy comp.

After no-repping the axle - which was inevitable after it was upped to 150kg - I hit a good deep rep on the squat. Immediately I racked it and left it. Though potentially there may have been more there, it was a 15kg PB and it was just pure relief to get it, especially after seeing so many bomb because of depth.

The rest of the day went fairly well. Overall I ended up placing 6th - far higher than I could ever have imagined. More importantly, I could easily see where I could have picked up more points and had managed to put together a decent run of events.

A week or so later I was penciled in on the Elite Midlands qualifier. However, I chose to leave it, for numerous reasons.

After that point I had planned to lose some weight for Summer, ready to get married in July. This goal was also achieved. I lost about 11kg in total - down from 125kg to 114kg - and felt a lot better for it.

A few months later, I have started to build my weight back up and am coming back stronger than before. I have squatted 260kg for 2 in just a belt, push pressed 135kg on an axle, deadlifted a sub-maximal 290kg*2 and my bench/strict press has improved.

The next two months will see a return to some focus on the deadlift, along with some carefully chosen evens/conditioning, and a general tightening of the diet. After that it will be a hard and heavy preparation for the UKSC Midlands.

I have some much more specific targets for next year: 280kg raw squat, 150kg axle, 330kg deadlift. I will also compete in the UKSC qualifier again, the UK Strongman North in August, and at most one or two 'bigger' competitions (e.g. Bodypower, Elite - not yet decided). Where I will place is anyone's guess - you can only control what you do. But I will continue to enjoy.
