There's been squat in every WSM since 2007

i think it's actually been in every WSM since 2001.
always some sort of squat. either keg apparatus, tyres, giant barbell or safari truck.

re the Arnold- would love to see burke win.

Fair enough, but last time I checked men are still men ! I'm still shocked they were as strong as they were!

well i'll leave the feminisation of the modern man for a separate thread!
but all good regardless. was just laying some points down.
you're right, they were animals.

What makes you think training has actually changed? "Westside" has set raw strength training back twenty years lol
They had drugs back then!
Supplements are bulls**t

Agree 100%

I don't believe it has changed. with the exception of the proliferation of equipped garbage.
i know they had drugs then and i also know supps are bulls**t.

I find it interesting that records have stood for 40 years. Even though everyone usually assumes that now must be the peak for everything- (no way guys of old could be better than us now). find me another sport that has that kind of ridiculous record longevity.
My point re the supps, etc- usually new equipment or training methods, or the old chestnut- drugs, is dragged up as the reason for records being smashed. ie- tartan running surfaces for sprinters vs grass, however in powerlifting, even with new bars, knee wraps, flash gym equipment, etc are barely achieving what the original powerlifters were hitting in the 60's and 70's.

back to the OP, thanks for the link, enjoyed the read. Happy

granty said:Great read, in my ignorance I didn't really expect the powerlifters of the 70s to be so strong! shows what can be done without some of the recent supps of today.

Thing that stuck out to me was the 230 x 15 bench by Kaz! then again he did bench 300 kg raw so should be expected i suppose.

Man you guys gotta read more. Powerlifters back then were stronger than now. Guys like Larry Pacifico, John Kuc and Don Reinhoudt set records in the 70's that have only just been broken in the past 6 months! 40 f**kin years to break lifting records even with today's training, equip, supps, drugs, whatever. Doug Young was benching 280kg in the late 70's with a flat back and barely leg drive in the 242 class. Doyle kenady first to break the 900lbs deadlift barrier, kaz first to bench 300kg. not many guys now doing that either.

Back when men were men

Cool

Dave waddington 1st 1000lbs squat, 2 weeks before competing in WSM. Lee Moran 1000lbs Squat also. Freaks!

Not exclusively wayne. my interests span most things. constantly reading and learning. Recently there just seems to be a high proportion of articles where bigfoot is blamed for crimes in the US. I feel this thread is the correct place to collect such information.

Crossfit isnt too bad in some ways but there are a few things which are just plain crazy, like atlas stone squats, where you have to shoulder a stone, roll it to the back of your neck and squat. What happens if you fall foward, going to be hard to get out of the way of that stone!
