» Getting a jacked upper back (Go to post)07-03-2016 @ 13:43
Post Edited: 07.03.2016 @ 13:43 PM by matthewvc
the one exercise i used and love is heavy cheat rows off floor.
feel this across entire upper back, rhomboids, traps, lats and erectors

these lot do them almost identically to how i do them. (don't go so heavy like the guy around 2.50 mark)

210 BP

385 DL - missed 400 but it was close, pulled it strongman style, looking to get hips close
and knees forward of bar to hitch it to finish, realised and aborted as it would get reds.
the strength is there to do it powerlifting style for sure.

he sinks them in comp thats all that matters. his lead up to 472.5kg was a load of high looking training efforts.

Paul - Can't remember what Del pulled but it was impressive, I have a video and will upload at some point.

good to meet you too. i'll probably be attending the manchester one you're planning to do in as spectator.
del sure it was 380 - but they had an odd combo of plates (think they ran out of red 25s for the biggest lifters) so maybe wrong.

If you are, look out for a fat ginger bloke wearing a navy blue Inzer T-shirt and maybe come and say hello as it will be me.

I'm there (not competing) with some of the Ralls powerlifting team. Think there's 3 of us lifting and maybe 3-4 more of us spectating/handling. I'll look out for you

Not a very clean lift. Bar looks like a nightmare once it is off the floor.

it'll be easier to get off the floor but once you start having to hitch, or even just get the hips through, the whippiness makes it incredibly hard. you can see the shockwaves going through ed's body as he tries to finish the lift off.

» Russian Squat Routine - advice/opinion? (Go to post)03-03-2016 @ 11:23
rawlifter said:Ok so tried to post this yesterday and for some weird reason had issues so try again.

Going to try the 6 week Russian Squat Routine - 3 weeks accumulation followed by 3 weeks intensification.

I have never run anything like this before so was just looking for any advice or opinions on it? How were the gains etc?

Also how did you program your other lifts around it?

Thanks,

it can work. recovery is a massive problem as you get stronger with these type of programs.

did it early on with bench, went from 120kg to 140kg x 2 over two cycles (separated by a couple of months doing random bb stuff)
also added 15kg to squat, but i was squatting 3/4 depth bb-style so i may just have got higher lol.

did it last year at a much higher level, all was good until i hit 162.5x5x5 - strength was good, but tore pectoral on 3rd set.
had been aware of increasing deep soreness on the preceding 6x2 session and shouldn't pushed on tbh.

my advice is: calorie excess, lots of sleep, stretching etc after every session. reduce other lift volume/intensity to maintenance. partially the reason i f**ked up last year: was still pushing hard on squats and deadlifts.

Squats paused no belt
Bar x loads
80 x 5
120 x 3
160 x 2
180 x 2 - old wraps loose
200 x 2 - tighten up
220 x 2
240 x 2 - good fast reps + 3 count pauses
220 x 2 - first rep twisting abomination SI joint pain flare up

Deadlift
120 x 1 - si joint says 'no more floor pulls'

Deadlift off 3 inch blocks
150 x 2 - pain ok
180 x 2
200 x 2 - bit more ache
220 x 1 - time to stop

Pulldowns
4 x 5

Back extension on pulldown machine
1 x 8

Still beaten up from last weeks big efforts.
Aggravated SI joint a little coming out the bottom of a paused squat and twisting half way up.

Deadlifts just bare minimum really.
Time to see sports physio I think.

Also, what would be the best flavour of crisps to opt for with healing in mind?

make sure your sleep is good, stress levels low and hydrated - when they are good i do notice enhanced recovery,
when they're s**t i ache, lift less, pick up crappy injuries more.

i never feel anything noticeable off specific foods or supplements over just getting enough cals and protein.

Raw bench
70*10
100*8
120*3
140*3
150*3
155*3
160*3 starting to feel good
165*3 pb good
170*2 pb good
177.5 *1 PB!! Happy
182.5*1 PB!!!!! Wow 400lbs
187.5*1 PBBBBBBBBB! !!! :O
192.5 f LOL

3 board narrow grip
170 3*3

Raw
120*10,10

Sod it.

In actual shock, huge PB. Not bad for an equipped lifter Wink

10kg PB after all those triples too is good going.
you must be good for 200kg raw if you tapered and did it competition mode (minimal warmups, psyching up, ammonia etc)

are you planning on GPC/BPU?
only sitting at 90kg with aim to cut to 82.5kg shouldn't be a huge nightmare under 24-hour weigh-in rules
week long water load, carb cut + dandelion root and senna should get you to 85-ish,
the rest hot bath and a good rehydrate and glycogen loading plan, be back up to, maybe even over 90kg by time comp starts.
