Hook Grip Advice

Starting to try to transition over to hook grip for my deads...I worked up to 280kg today and it was ok but grip slipped at the top as you can see in vid, and advice on how to strengthen it..static holds? Reps?

Do hook grip shrugs once or twice a week.

3 sets of 5 - 8 will be enough. Work up to a weight that is a little challenging (hook grip wise, not shrug wise) - 180kg might be enough for your first bash at it.

Then every session add 2.5 / 5kg.

Rinse and repeat - Within a few weeks your hook will be golden!

Also, use a double wrap of decent zinc oxide tape below the knuckle of your thumbs.
This doesn't do much to make it any less painful, but any wear and tear will take place on the tape and not your skin.

I find that using a thin deadlift bar, if you can mixed grip it you can almost certainly hook grip it too, it is just a matter of wrapping your thumbs around the bar as far as possible and squeezing it as hard as you can.

With an eleiko bar (or bar of equal/greater circumference) theres no point unless you have massive hands.

Just practice with moderate lifts, it will soon catch up.

I have been hook gripping for ages now. Granted I'm a sub 250 puller, but I don't feel any pain now. Or at least very little.

Imo a far better option than alternate when mastered.

it's great position to pull from but I do think you need reasonably big hands to get best out of it -
i have dropped too many 300+ deadlifts torn thumb many times not being able to wrap it fully under bar.

switched back to mix recently and grip feels so much stronger.

Probably different when you pull real weights, but I like it. I guess I have pretty big paws. That definitely helps!

it's not so much the weight after all, one man's 350kg is another man's 150kg. it's more how long the lift takes x weight.
which sadly is a double whammy as weight increases so does time to complete the lift. so the failure develops quite suddenly over a smallish increase.

for my typical weights this happens with a hook grip:
290kg - easily held on to
305kg - fail.

As long as it goes up, doesn't matter how!

What's your max again Matthew? About 320?

In straps? more probably - I doubled 312.5 on ipf bar recently

yeah, it would give me a 1RM over 330kg, but it's not much use in a PL comp where straps are banned.

I shall be experimenting with hook grip in the upcoming months. This thread interests me.

Awesome advice all thank you...I will persevere with it and see if I can get it up to the 320+ range so I know its there, worth trying to I think.

George Lehman and Omar made a video about hook grip was interesting .

For me gripping the bar harder doesnt make it easier, i have quite a loose grip on the bar and only have 1 maybe 2 fingers over my thumb.
