After going up and having a chat with Jack up at Spartan Performance today im more than likely going to be swapping gyms and getting some strongman training in my life. Now the only downside is ill probably only be able to get up there 3 times a week. I dont see a major problem with this, however from what i can see alot of strongman trainers seem to be in the gym 4-6 times a week.

So how do you do it? Im sure i cant be the only one that is on a tight training schedule!

My plan is to do something like:
Tuesday - squat/bench
Thursday - deadlift/press
Saturday - Events

Seems sensible enough to me, but im a fat powerlifter, currently.

Whats your take??

Monday - deadlifts, deadlift variations (sumo/18''/deficit - could be any one or more depending on how feel) then back and bicep work

Tuesdays (starting next week)- raw squat of some sort - any combination of box/paused/safety squat bar/bands/speed then good mornings, hamstring and posterior chain work and conditioning

Wednesdays - bench, board work, chest, shoulder and tricep work

Fridays - heavy squats, front squats, hamstring and posterior chain work, speed bench with or without bands, grip work

interesting. So you concentrate on increasing 'gym lift' strength in off-season and then only train events in the run up to comps?

I never got on with the westside method personally. thanks for your post anyway Ken. Just been watching your appearance at the uk's as it happens!

Tues: Deadlifts and back.

Wed: Pressing, chest and triceps.

Fri: Squats.

Sun: Events.

I do a physical job, so most of my cardio/strength conditioning are done there.

That seems pretty much right to me. I do more or less the same at the moment (dead/bench/pulldowns Tues, squat, push press, shrugs Thurs, Events Sat). If you are training events it is much easier to do too much and destroy yourself.

Over winter (when I didn't have any cops coming up)

ALternate 8 week blocks of

Session 1: Squat + OH
Session 2: Deadlift + Bench
Session 3: Squat + OH

and

Session 1: Deadlift + Bench
Session 2: Squat + OH
Session 3: Deadlift + Bench

Some event stuff thrown in where possible

Now with comp coming up, along the lines of

Session 1: Squat + OH
Session 2: Deadlift + Bench + farmers
Session 3: Events
if I have time
Session 4: Squat or deadlift, some sort of press, some event work
Things a bit up in the air just now as quite busy at the moment though.

Would like to train more often ideally though

At the minute it's

Tues - events

Thurs - lower

Friday - upper

Other days I might do some cardio. Would like to add in a 4th day on the Monday but don't know what to do that won't be detrimental to my events on the Tuesday.

Used to train more but more rest and doing lower once a week is better for me I think.

Yeah cause if you think about it I know how to lift a stone, run with a yoke, flip a tyre etc etc so if I can develop not only my overall strength but my power generation (speed, flexability etc) in the offseason when I come back to doing events and dialling in for a comp I shouldn't need too much work.

Actually for UK's because I was competing so much over summer, and training alone I think I only did events once or twice in the 8 or 10 week build up to the show; but I was increasing my overall strength still and doing events at comps to help me prep.

i was thinking the same thing. i mean i suppose you could split out squats and deads into different days, but how you program it will surely impact on what you can do on an events day?

Ive got my first SM session on Saturday so will see how it goes and plan the other 2 days around it a think, but from the looks of things im sure i can work it.

cheers for all the input!
