Took a while.

Sums mine up too. A satisfactory third word meant some decent thinking was needed.

A relatively simple four

It looked at first to be a rather daunting task but a little thought and some stroking of the beard and a very likely first four letters, I had already eliminated several of the possible last letters, and my first real option proved to be correct.

I haven't even looked to be honest and probably won't bother. Since they improved things some years back it has literally become a race that anything can win. It previously enjoyed that reputation but it reality only about eight from forty had any realistic chance. Nowadays it is actually true.

A long, drawn out four

Possibly my worst start ever. Spent a long time believing that the answer started with what turned out to be the last letter, once that was realized things did get easier

A very, very satisfying two.
Usual opener and then a few moments of rumination, followed by an epiphany.

A few moments of ruminative beard stroking and the penny dropped. No scribbling required.

Had a jolly day out in Liverpool yesterday as young Mitch lost his powerlifting cherry in a novice competition. He has been mentored by Phil the behemoth who has done a sterling job of it.

The gym was small and very cramped and the bas***ds charged me a fiver just to watch. It was very obvious (as it was at last week's weightlifting) who had been taught by someone who knows what they're doing and those who have been taught by someone who does not.

One tale that stood out, one chap during his squat warm-up did 140 x 5 and then followed that with 140 x 3. Those were his last two warm-up sets. He opened on 185 and did it with immense difficulty, he then did 190 which almost killed him. I assumed that he would surely pass on his third attempt, but no. He attempted 195 and never got within a mile of it.

He seemed a pleasant enough chap and I wish him well, but that was madness in my eyes.

Mitch however, got nine passed lift and twenty seven white lights. Squatted 155/170/180, benched 100/110/120 and deadlifted 175/190/205, total 505 at 86 bodyweight. He won his group in a canter. Kudos to Big Phil for his weight selections. Opinions may vary, but to me that was how to do a first ever competition. Exactly how to do it

Is this some trendy Russian training method the kids are all into?

I suspect it's just a symptom of being "coached" by somebody without a clue. Possibly themself, of course.

Whatever happened to "your opener should be something you can reliably triple in training" as a guideline for novice competitors?
