I have almost zilch experience of both of these things, but I'm aware that opting for a hook grip on a Hercules Hold is generally a bad move. Why doesn't it work? I'm curious.

id say it depends on your pain threshold, a hook grip is going to hurt more than any other grip so that might be why people dont use it, but it is a stronger grip when deadlifting so probably a stronger one on hercules hold, one thing i would say is dont use a bloody thumbless grip.

I think someone tried it at the Giants Live qualifier the other week, Adam Bishop maybe?

Im interested in this also as my standard grip's pretty s**te but I can hook grip not bad.

As JT says, I did hook grip last Sunday at the euro's qualifier. It ended really badly for me in the comp, but it had previously felt very strong in training.
It's not painful in anyway, in fact its probably less painful that a standard grip.
I believe it could work really well, I never set my left hand up properly and it started to slip as soon as I took the full weight, which ruined my chances.
It's a gamble, if set up perfectly I believe it could work, possibly even better than a standard grip. But any slight error in hand/thumb positioning and your f**ked.
So to summarise, it's a big gamble, one I won't be taking again.

I've tried this as well and same reaction as Ben, it ended badly. Although you can hold on, the pain is brutal and I felt that when the thumb let lose, so did the rest of the grip and the handle slipped out of my hand. With a regular grip, the pain is managable and you can let the grip slowly release buying you a couple of seconds which might mean a few placings in the grand scheme of things.

hook grip=bad on grip/pain endurance events.

Same as a regular grip except you place the thumb first, then wrap the remaining fingers around it, as opposed to the other way round.

For some reason I don't hook grip as much for regular deads/rack pulls, but I ALWAYS use hook grip for farmers. Never done Hercs but there could be some relevance.

I've done at least one comp where the hook grip wasn't allowed for farmers (and maybe for a car DL hold). Is it usually allowed?

I've never heard of a "no hook grips" rule. Surely a lot of farmer's handles are too chunky to do a properly locked hook grip?

never got hook to work for farmers although I use it for deadlift. I wouldnt have thought it could work for farmers given that the handles dont rotate?

It can still work on farmers but I tend to tear my calluses when I hook grip on farmers and so opt for a normal grip, I always use hook-grip on all deadlift sets and never have too much issues with my calluses on them.

I've only done a couple of novice level comps, and was never told anything about hooking/no hooking.
