| As regular readers will expect, it won't be on the BBC because the bits that are true aren't interesting and the bits that aren't true are bo***cks. I would write a full pull-apart, but that would be a waste of everybody's time, so I shan't. The TLDR is, though: indeed they didn't know after the first phase of trials whether it would reduce transmission (because it worked so well that almost no trial participants caught it, so there was no data), but of course it was reasonable to assume it would. They didn't claim it would, and were heavily criticised at the time for not doing so. Now we know that (as anybody would expect) it is remarkably safe, and highly effective, even against the variants. Ends.
