Double session update:

Wednesday @ An Kang High school

Was going to do snatch triples on 60. Did my first triple and then the coach came to talk to me. Said that the way I lifted was more "Russian style" i.e. with more emphasis on hip bang etc. which is fine but they obviously teach Chinese style so it was up to me if I wanted to try and change. I said I was willing to try so they had me drop down to 40kg and tried to make a lot of alterations. Twist the elbows so that they're pointing back at the start position, in an effort to arch the back and bring the chest out more. Hips lower to use more legs and get torso more vertical. A very intentional double knee bend to use more legs at power position and more vertical bar path. Split feet wider during the catch. It all felt SUPER AWKWARD and painful if I'm honest lol. Really hard to keep myself in the start position for more than a couple of sessions as it was so strenuous! Did about 30+ singles on 40kg, only a couple looked a little bit better apparently. It's definitely going to be a struggle to get the hang of it and break my usual habits. The bar was dragging up my legs like crazy. I'll stick with it for a while though, I think it would be a shame to miss out on this learning opportunity! Didn't do anything else, and didn't have time to stretch as I had to catch my bus back home. So the knee felt a bit s**t the next day but nothing too serious.

Today @ Formosa Fitness

I'm here learning mandarin for a bit mate. It's my long-term strategy for infiltrating the Chinese weightlifting team lol

So yesterday I went down to see a weightlifting gym in the Taipei suburbs. It's the only weightlifting gym in the entire city! And one of only two weightlifting gyms in the country open to the public...It's two hours away from my flat but it was worth it for sure!

It's at a high school in some dank room below the running track, really old school chinese weightlifting gym. Saw about 50 cockroaches there lol. No air con so I was a dripping mess after a few minutes! Everyone was super friendly and welcoming - only one guy there speaks english so it will be a great opportunity for me to improve my Chinese. They just let me have a play around yesterday. Was very nervous about lifting in front of them at first!

Snatch
60x2
62.5 for 4 doubles

Did a few clean-front squat-jerk complexes with 75kg.

Clean pull triples on 100kg.

My knee's a bit weird today, done a lot of work this week. Also the only bad thing about the gym is there are no leg extension/curl machines so couldn't do my prehab. Will have to think of another way to do it. They gave me some dinner afterwards which was really nice of them.

Will be training there on Wednesday and Sunday evenings for now, and 2 sessions at the s**t gym in the city. The daily training is reserved for the high school and adult teams so I think they're a bit reluctant to let me train with them as it's not like I'll ever be representing Taiwan or anything so it would just be an extra drain on their resources. The coach said my technique was fairly good but said my first pull needs work - my centre of gravity is a bit off which leads to excessive lean back at the power position. Didn't go into any further detail. He was a bit confused why my snatch PB was 95 but I was doing doubles on 62.5, and why I was struggling to stand up with a 75kg clean lol.

Was interesting talking to them about the Taiwanese weightlifting culture. When kids are selected and what their training looks like. Was fascinated to hear that EVERYBODY practices with the broomstick at the end of each session! One of the kids asked me why somebody would CHOOSE to do weightlifting lol. Fascinating stuff. Anyway more to come!

RDLs
65 3 sets of 10

press

Tried out the other branch of the gym I've been using. A bit further away but it's newer and the bars are straight! Still don't spin though and not allowed to drop from overhead... Think I've made some developments on a decent place to train though. I also emailed the local xfit boxes - £80 a month... Screw that.

So the uni has baseball fields, olympic sized swimming pool, table tennis hall, tennis courts, volleyball courts, basketball courts, martial arts rooms, trampolining rooms, squash courts...yet not a single weightlifting platform!! Could not believe it. So went back to the average gym from yesterday...need to sort a proper gym out asap!

Well, arrived safely in Taiwan yesterday. Today's mission was to find a gym to finally train again. The uni gym was closed unfortunately but I found another one that had bumpers close by. Will try and check the uni one out tomorrow. Down to 91kg BW when I last checked two weeks ago...

Trained last night for my final session at Bethnal Green before I move abroad. Weighed sub-99kg I think. Didn't eat for the 6 hours before getting to the gym, then got out of work late and forgot my shorts to top it all off lol. Could not be arsed with snatches or C&Js so just decided to max my deadlift...lol

Deadlifts - (conventional, in WL shoes)
130x3 DOH
150x2
165 hook grip
big belt on
180
switched to mixed grip
195
205
215
222.5 - F
222.5 - F

Well that was pleasantly surprising...think my best ever conventional was 200kg done years ago. Best deadlift ever is a 220 sumo when I was actually training for powerlifting. Haven't done heavy deadlifts for months and months, then get within 5kg of all time best..makes sense lol. Back rounded a bit on the 215, the 222 only came a couple of inches off the floor on both attempts. Finished off with some curls. Tongue Back is pretty DOMSed up today!!

Anyway, no training for 2 months! Adios.
